PIPS’ Travel Time Measurement System (TTMS) uses the PIPS Spike integrated camera/processor to identify and match vehicles at two or more points (nodes) in a road network to accurately calculate dynamic travel times for each defined road segment. TTMS provides real time monitoring of road network performance, enabling the road authority to optimize its use, management and operation.
TTMS algorithms automatically filter vehicles that are traveling through the network at either a much faster rate than normal traffic (such as an emergency vehicle) or at a much slower rate (vehicles making frequent stops along their journey) to ensure that the reported travel time accurately reflects normal traffic behavior.
When integrated with a variable messaging board, TTMS can be a powerful tool to reduce congestion by alerting drivers of potential delays. TTMS can also be used in traffic studies to identify congested routes and plan for road network improvements.
