Integration of PIPS ALPR into an open road or free-flowing tolling system allows for the creation of electronic-toll lanes with automated gates or freeflow toll lanes where enforcement is accomplished by the use of fixed cameras. ALPR is used to identify tolling violators by providing images of vehicles and their license plates to the tolling authority for enforcement.
PIPS ALPR is able to automate the process typically performed by individuals manually collecting tolls at toll booths. In addition, it allows such transactions to be performed while vehicles travel at high speed. These systems are also emerging as the most efficient way to implement congestion charging.
With PIPS market leading recognition and read rates, increasing numbers of customers see ALPR technology as an attractive way to complement or validate RFID / DSRC technology.
Systems for tolling have been successfully deployed in very high profile transportation corridors such as the SR91 FasTrak Express Lanes in Southern California, Irvine Hills Toll System managed by TCA, and with the Virginia DOT.
